Drivers and Cyclists Sharing the Road: Influencing Beginner Driver Education

The Ontario Public Health Association, through its Built Environment Workgroup (BEWG) has been working to support safe share the road practices with drivers and cyclists. As part of that support, the OPHA BEWG has conducted research to better understand the needs and attitudes of Beginner Driver Education (BDE) school staff around including and/or enhancing sharing the road with cyclists (STRC) curriculum content by gathering intofmration about the current curriculum used by their school. The information gathered from this survey has helped to guide OPHA’s strategy around STRC information in BDE schools throughout the province.

Colleen Cooper, BScN, is a Public Health Nurse at the Region of Waterloo Public Health. Colleen is a champion of the Active and Safe Routes to School initiative and promoter of CAN-BIKE skills training, a series of courses on all aspects of cycling safety and enjoyability. Colleen uses her bike to commute to work and run errands about 9 months of the year.
