Innovation Labs in Healthcare: A Review of Design Labs for Healthcare

Sean Molloy, Senior Director, Quality, Safety and Innovation at St. Joseph’s hospital in Toronto. Sean just completed the Master of Design Graduate program in Strategic Foresight and Innovation at OCAD University. His thesis project analyzed the growing phenomenon of the use of design labs to foster and accelerate innovation in complex health organizations, globally. Sean will share the key findings from his seminal thesis work, and the implications on how design-based innovation labs are built, designed, run and evaluated.

Chris McCarthy, Director of the Innovation Learning Network (ILN); Chief Innovation Officer at Hopelab in California; and former Director of the Innovation Consultancy at Kaiser Permanente. Chris was one of the first leaders to bring a design-focused innovation model to a major health system (Kaiser Permanente) while also leading a formost collaborative of ~40 health innovation labs and design firms who all focus on health innovation through good design (Innovation Learning Network). Chris will reflect on Sean’s work, together with his decade+ career in this space.

A small group of local design/innovation labs will do a live workshop to self-review / peer-review their model against the findings of the research.
