Supporting Carers of People with Eating Disorders

When: October 26, 2015
Time: 9:00 am
Where: 30 Fairway Road South

About the Workshop

Janet Treasure’s work with carers of people with eating disorders involves incorporating them into the therapeutic treatment team.  By provided education and skills, this approach address some of the interpersonal behaviours (criticism, hostility, overprotection, accommodation and enabling) which can play a role in the development andmaintenance of the illness.  Early evidence indicates that Skills Training of carers helps to improve eating disorder symptomology and quality of life for clients, while reducing the expressed emotion, time spent caregiving and carer burder.  People with eating disorders alsoidentify more positive caregiver behavious.

Professor Treasure specialized in the treatment of eating disorders at the South London and Maudsley Hospitals.  Her research has led to greater understanding of anorexia and bulimia, resulting in the development of new treatments that are inspired — and collaboratively implemented — by patients and their families.  Dr. Treasure aslo has an active academic career at Kings College London.  She has over 360 papers listed on PubMed and she’s written (or edited) 8 academic books and 3 self-help books.  She is also an associate editor for The Journal of Eating Disorders and the European Eating Disorder Review.

Participants will learn:

  1. How to develop a needs assessment for carers and clients
  2. How to set change objectives with carers and clients
  3. Evidence-based implementation
  4. Processes and techniques of practical application
